In His Sunday Best

In the early 20th century, exploring the British countryside was a major working-class escape. Workers from industrial hubs such as Yorkshire and Lancashire fled the mill and mining towns on Sundays to hike in the Pennine moors and dales , finding freedom and respite in nature. Because durable, specialised outdoor clothing was expensive, these early ramblers simply wore their most rugged everyday clothes, often their "Sunday best" suits, flat caps, sturdy boots, and waistcoats.  ‘In His Sunday Best’ is a playful exploration around the themes of respite and escape. It examines our relationship with nature through leisure activities, which in themselves shape and mould certain elements of the natural world.
